TRI KRUHY - The Three Circles

Peter Kuzmišín's poetry collection The Three Circles is an intensely personal work. It brings together poems written over more than a decade, forming a poetic autobiography that traces the author's journey from his literary "birth" to the present day. (As a glimpse into his "prenatal" literary ambitions, the opening cycle even includes a childhood rhyme about bears.)

Reading The Three Circles, we witness Peter's development as a poet—his tireless search for both a poetic voice and a way of life, a journey that sometimes leads him into the embrace of the Muses and at other times into blind alleys. His earliest poems are marked by youthful idealism, filled with grand words and uncompromising declarations on profound philosophical themes. Although their sincerity is unquestionable, they are often characterized by a certain youthful naivety. The second group consists of poems that capture fleeting moments—the poetry of sleepless nights and renewing sunrises. Thanks to their subject matter, these poems feel more natural and generally rank among the stronger pieces in the collection. From a formal perspective, short epigrammatic poems predominate. While some occasionally suffer from an awkward closing line, the chosen form complements the author's almost photographic poetic vision.

In the second part—or rather, the second circle—Peter turns to nature, the eternal inspiration of poets. Following the classical structure of the four seasons and guided by an impressionistic sensibility, he explores a rich spectrum of delicate emotions, all united by the enduring theme of constant change.

The third circle, containing poems from more recent years, is the most mature, while still maintaining a clear connection with the earlier sections. Here the author has successfully refined his preferred concise style, inspired in many respects by Japanese haiku, creating compact, balanced poems with a clear and powerful core of meaning. The poems of the third circle are undoubtedly the greatest strength of the collection. Yet it should not be forgotten that they were made possible by the verses of the first and second circles, without which the book would not tell Peter's full story.

Through his poetry, Peter Kuzmišín expresses the universal need shared by many young poets—to give voice to their experiences and to bring an inner order to them. He does not rely on elaborate literary forms, dazzling metaphors, or references to celebrated authors and historical realities. Instead, he achieves his effect through simple words, a keen eye for detail, and a personal mythology that reflects his unconventional way of seeing the world.

In this postmodern age of sophisticated literary cocktails, his poems are like sips of pure water drawn straight from a well. They may not overwhelm the senses, but they refresh the reader with honesty, clarity, and quiet authenticity.
